Over the weekend I picked up an older, well-loved Hohner to add to my growing collection. I did some poking around the internet and it looks like the dad or granddad of the HA1040. The only real differences are the bellows, which are a little bulkier than the HA1040, the treble keys which show the wooden pressy-mechanism part and have mother of pearl keys, and the grill cover which is made of wood instead of metal. It's also way more worn than the pictures I've seen of the 1040 but it did indeed used to be gold like the newer one.

I'm a bit of a baby when it comes to accordions so I don't really know much about it other than the general specs you get by looking at it and taking it apart. It's terribly dusty but in great condition considering it's probably 40+ years old (or so I am guessing). I'd love to restore it or just do some minor fixes to get it in better condition but I really want to know more about it before I do that.

I was hoping I could get some help IDing the thing. I've attached a picture, I hope that's helpful!]]>

I am looking for a new accordion, but I'm moving from Oakland to Europe pretty soon. Am I better off buying there or here? I'm scared of the Euro zone!!!

Thanks,

Subject: Excelsior model 0.0. - by: geo http://accordionist.org/forum/the-social-hall-a-newsroom/6069-excelsior-model-00?limit=8&start=8#6069 http://accordionist.org/forum/the-social-hall-a-newsroom/6069-excelsior-model-00?limit=8&start=8#6069 The keyboard is perfectly flat and alligned , with a fast / shallow action, and barely yellowed as some vintage Excelsiors tend to be.
The double 0 model is a light 21/22 lbs, 4/5 reed professional accordion that sports the same Symphony Grand grille but lacks the tone modulator. (plywood treble baffle)
It plays 100% at this point in time (except a couple slightly fwapping valves) but I`m contemplating doing a total rewax/revalve job since the wax is brittle and the leather valves are rather old and do not match the mint cosmetic condition of the accordion itself. I`m thinking a rebuild is fully warranted considering the excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition of the accordion itself and this should increase it`s value considerably.
The pallet pads and leathers are supple and cushions are like new being felt vs foam that disintigrates with age.
Supposedly it has handmade reeds and the sound is rather good but I was expecting it to sound as good or maybe a bit better than my Giulietti 115 but it clearly does not.
That said it`s a terrific instrument and not too often found in this mint condition. I`m excited , can you tell?.
Here`s a link to exactly what it looks like but not the one I have.

I justed wanted to introduce myself. I have been playing accordion on and off for the last couple of years. Mostly off. I recently got a new teacher and I am having fun learning klezmer tunes. My current favorite is Kievar Bulgar from The Compleat Klezmer. I went busking for the first time at the Farmer's Market in Oakland and had a ton of fun.

This is a rare (and probably brief) period where my life isn't completely insane and I can actually relax for a bit and enjoy taking my playing to the next level. I hope to find some new songs here, as well as some advice on what to do about finding a better instrument. So I''ll ...

See you on the forums!

Subject: Greetings / What should I start on? - by: Halley http://accordionist.org/forum/the-social-hall-a-newsroom/6061-greetings--what-should-i-start-on#6061 http://accordionist.org/forum/the-social-hall-a-newsroom/6061-greetings--what-should-i-start-on#6061 My names Halley, and I live in Maine, USA.

I am looking to start learning to play the accordion, but I'm a little lost.

I really love traditional folk music from Eastern Europe and Central/South America, so I was thinking I would go with a button accordion(I also enjoy the aesthetics of a button accordion). I also would prefer a lighter accordion, so I figured a two row diatonic would be perfect.

Now this is where I get confused. First of all, how do I decide what key my new accordion should be in? Secondly, will I be greatly restricted using an accordion with only one or two keys?

I don't want to make a rather large purchase without being sure that I am getting something I will actually be able to use.

Thanks!

Edit:
I am also of acadian decent, so would like to be able to play some acadian/cajun music as well. It would be nice to be able to play at the local Franco-American center when I get a little experience.

Lastly, I don't have much money, so I'm looking to keep this under $300 if possible. I know thats pretty low, but I have to work with what I have.]]>
